In late 2006, Sensi Development acquired a smaller warehouse along Cary Street in the backyard of Ed Eck’s Uptown area just west of VCU. The goal was to create modern and affordable living spaces walkable to the Fan District’s numerous restaurants and cultural options. After enlisting the help of local architect, The Johannas Design Group and local contract, Monument Construction, The Cary Mews concept was born.
With two distinctly different phases, the project featured a historic warehouse renovation and a high modern tower concept that focused on a central courtyard, or Mews. The distinctive look of the spaces and their fabulous outdoor patios have caught many a driver’s eyes as the cruise down Cary Street towards VCU or Downtown.

A smaller project of only 13 units, the Mews is another departure from the traditional renovations seen throughout the Fan with its modern design influences and metal-shingled exterior. The tower units in the Mews are somewhat taller than most homes and buildings in the Fan creating a greater sense of light and space within the units themselves. The use of modern design elements and neo-traditional materials created a unique structure in Richmond’s landscape.
